Sandra Chiles, Managing Director of inPlace Recruitment has put out a challenge to the travel industry to step up and become ambassadors to ensure the industry remains a vibrant and exciting career choice for new entrants.
Chiles asks “do you speak with enthusiasm about your job when you’re with family and friends? Have you influenced others to join the industry? Do you believe the travel industry is a progressive industry to work in?”
It would seem we are still not promoting our industry as an exciting and worthwhile career choice for the next generation, not through the media or ourselves, as ambassadors of the industry.
There is a perception in the general public that the Travel Industry is dying, not needed today “when you can do everything yourself online”. It’s up to us to set the record straight and promote the broad spectrum of roles and career paths that are available. New roles are emerging all the time in the industry. There is still a strong demand for traditional skills as well as a growing need for new skill sets incorporating the latest technologies in the areas of IT, marketing and digital media to name a few.
Chiles says it’s disappointing to see interest decline in an industry that she believes has a lot to offer and is as relevant today as it has ever been. “We all know the power and value from ‘word of mouth’ recommendations. What we say now will influence the future of the industry. Ambassadors please step up.”
